Hi, I’m Holly, former hairstylist (although I seem to continue to dabble in that!) turned entrepreneur + chief topknot maker at TopKnot Girl!
I’m wife to Nathan + cool mama to William (6) and Poppy (3).
I started TopKnot Girl in 2014 after discovering a market for functional, comfortable and on-trend headwear in a range of sizes and styles.
I make all products from our home studio on the mid-north coast. Nathan packages and ships your orders and deals with some admin and bookwork, while I produce the items + connect with our tribe on social media!
Who is a fan of house cleaning? Anyone? Anyone??! Not many hands going up (mine certainly isn’t) are there?
I’ll tell you one of the reasons why I don’t like cleaning (other than the obvious fact that I’d rather be on the couch watching Girls or something). It’s the harsh chemicals. Chemicals and ingredients in traditional cleaning products can impact on the environment in numerous ways, such as the rate in which they break down (assuming they are biodegradable), how they impact our waterways and wildlife, and if they have any potential effects on the people that use them. And it’s not only the effects that chemicals may on the environment, but the chemicals in commercial cleaning products often gave me really bad headaches and made my dermatitis flare up.
Then we stumbled across Lil Bit Better, a handmade business based in Melbourne, Victoria. The owner Liz, is passionate about changing the way we use cleaning products. Keenly aware of the environmental impact harsh chemicals have on the environment, she has created an amazing range of handmade natural and low impact cleaning products.
I’ve bought quite a few of Liz’s handmade cleaning products, and I’m going to share a few of my favourites with you!

When I started this journey almost 5 years ago, I didn’t know where it would lead me.
I have always loved handmade or artisan made items. I loved that I found something that was made by one person, it had that person’s imprint on it, it was unique and made in small batches. I had something special in my hands and that made me feel special too.
As it often does, it started with a desire to make some handmade clothing for my daughter. Ana was a petite baby and nothing fitted her very well. So I decided to make some of her own clothing.
How did your handmade journey begin? Can you remember or has it all disappeared in a haze of parcels, gorgeous fabrics and a now empty bank account (or is that just me)? I have always loved browsing handmade markets and loved a good craftanoon (but who doesn’t right?!). About 3.5 years ago, I purchased my first piece of handmade clothing for my daughter – a pair of funky boho harem pants from a market. I’ll be honest, the price scared me at first but we wore those things to death! My husband called them her happy pants. Now thinking about it they DID look just like the happy pants I wore as a kid in the 80s! Each time I went to that market, the maker recognised me, we chatted and built a relationship (she ended up selling her house, buying a caravan and travelling Australia!)… it was with this first purchase that I realised that when buying handmade you gain sooo much more than just a product! I immersed myself in everything handmade and quickly lost myself in the world of Facebook buy and sell sites trawling for my next handmade hit.
